WAR IN UKRAINE

When Clearview AI employees saw the images of the destruction from the Ukraine & Russia war, the team began brainstorming different ways our technology could be used to help.

Hoan Ton-That, CEO of Clearview AI, wrote a letter to the Ukrainian government listing out several potential use cases for our technology that could help Ukraine defend itself against the Russian invasion, which included, reuniting refugees separated from their families, identifying Russian operatives, and helping the government debunk false social media posts related to the war.

On March 11th, the Ministry of Defense in Ukraine responded. They saw a demo of Clearview AI and were setup with accounts and trained on the appropriate use of facial recognition technology. Word quickly spread and many other agencies, including the National Police of Ukraine, signed up.

By April 2022, merely a month later, 5 agencies, and 200 personnel were actively using the Clearview Al technology, completing over 5,000 searches on the platform. Clearview Al modified the platform and training materials to accommodate Ukrainian speaking users.

By July 2022, 4 months in, 7 agencies, and over 600 military personnel were actively using the Clearview AI platform, conducting over 60,000 searches. Each search had the potential to save a life at a checkpoint, help ID a missing person, and more.

CHECKPOINT SECURITY

In dangerous wartime situations, knowing who is a friend and who is an enemy is crucial to ensuring the safety of citizens and military personnel. Clearview Al has amassed over 2 billion images from public images on the Russian social media site, Vkontate, and was immediately useful in identifying potential Russian soldiers and infiltrators at checkpoints.

With the help of the unique Clearview AI software, we identify the faces of the Russian military who were killed or captured, check people at checkpoints and search for missing people.

Although the Russian authorities deny the presence of their military conscripts on the territory of Ukraine and send them without documents, this technology still helps to identify such people. To identify a person, the program's algorithm compares his image with pictures in the database, which contains more than 10 billion photos.

One interesting case study of how we used Clearview AI, [t]here was a man who was found in a Ukrainian hospital, claiming that he was a Ukrainian soldier who suffered from shell shock or some kind of trauma and that he forgot everything. And he was claiming that he was Ukrainian. So the doctor sent the picture to us, and we were able to ID him in a matter of minutes. We found his social network profile, and we established that he was Russian and, of course, he was brought to responsibility.

Photos and videos are checked for social-media accounts using an American facial-recognition program, Clearview AI. So far, more than 7,500 suspects have been identified, according to the national police. Charges have been filed against 127 members of the Russian military. Only 15 of those suspects are in custody.

Identifying dead soldiers and notifying their families is part of a campaign, according to a Telegram post by the Ukrainian vice prime minister Mykhailo Fedorov, to break through to the Russian public the cost of the conflict and to “dispel the myth of a ‘special operation’ in which there are ‘no conscripts’ and ‘no one dies'".

IDENTIFICATIONS OF DECEASED PEOPLE

Early on in the conflict, the Ukrainian military realized that Clearview AI’s technology could help with the identification of the departed. It was shown that the artificial intelligence Clearview AI developed was effective even if the face of an individual was disfigured. It was instrumental in helping counter Russian propaganda that the war was purely a "special operation", as many young conscripts were later identified.
