CHILD EXPLOITATION

MAY 2019   |   LAS VEGAS, NEVADA

A web services provider alerted authorities after a user received images depicting the sexual abuse of a young girl. The only clue was an adult face visible in one image. Investigators at Homeland Security Investigations turned to Clearview AI for help.

A CLUE WAS FOUND

Using Clearview AI, a potential clue was found. The suspect appeared in the background of an image that was available on the public internet. This was the only image in Clearview AI’s database at that time.

Detectives were able to positively identify the man. A search of the man’s electronic devices revealed that he was creating child sex abuse materials to sell on the dark web.

SIDE-BY-SIDE COMPARISON

Detectives were able to find the suspect in the background of another photo at a tradeshow. This photo allowed detectives to draw out two important clues:

Using this new information, the detective was able to go to Las Vegas, find the employer, get the name of the suspect, find other confirming evidence and make the arrest.

Clearview AI has revolutionized how we are able to identify and rescue children. Without Clearview AI, there would be no way we would have found that guy.

HSI IDENTIFIES 311 CHILD VICTIMS

During the three-week Operation Renewed Hope, investigators examining explicit online material involving children, often on the dark web and some decades old, made probable identifications of 311 child victims. HSI  also rescued several victims from ongoing abuse. HSI officials revealed that despite explicit material existing for years, Clearview AI helped generate fresh leads in previously unsolved cases.

The operation sent more than
100 leads to HSI field offices and 25 partnering countries. Some suspects in Canada and the U.S. have already been arrested.

No single effort like this has resulted in that amount of identifications in such a short period of time. [Clearview AI] can assimilate the data and put that puzzle together. Before, we didn’t have the pieces.

Over the past 12 months, my task force has arrested 66 subjects and identified & rescued 103 children. I'm confident in saying that Clearview AI was at minimum used to help identify these subject & victims.

PROTECTING CHILDREN

Clearview AI is now used by many agencies to help stop child abuse and rescue children from their abusers. Since many crimes against children take place through child abuse material circulating online, Clearview AI is often the only tool available to law enforcement that is able to identify an anonymous child’s photo.

Unmute Me

We were able to take one of the photographs from one of these online escort websites, upload it into Clearview, and, within seconds, Clearview was able to identify that individual. It was a 16-year-old female juvenile who was being sex-trafficked. We were able to get her immediately recovered, [...] and her trafficker is currently sitting in prison.
