CAPITOL RIOTS

JANUARY 6, 2021   |   WASHINGTON D.C.

Millions watched as rioters stormed the United States Capitol. Around the country, several law enforcement agencies turned to Clearview AI to investigate and help identify those rioters. One agency in particular was the Miami Police Department who were able to forward 13 potential matches to the FBI.

This is the greatest threat we’ve faced in my lifetime. The peaceful transition of power is foundational to our republic.

AVOIDING MISIDENTIFICATIONS

Instead of relying on tips and manual investigative work, agencies were able to save time to instantly identify the rioters, allowing them to be arrested quickly. Without Clearview AI, law enforcement would have taken weeks, if not months to identify these rioters.

During the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013, law enforcement agencies were flooded with thousands of tips, with no quick way to verify them. It took over 2 weeks with multiple misidentifications to identify just one suspect.

FACES MAKE CASES

Many of the rioters who stormed through the Capitol that day showed little interest in concealing their presence as demonstrated by posting selfies and gloating on social media. Despite some perpetrators being first-time offenders, Clearview AI was able to provide open source intelligence not found in traditional law enforcement databases that helped develop suspect leads.

If you want to use [facial recognition to] investigate somebody and [it] led you to them, and [law enforcement] interviews them, and they confess, I think it’s going to be fine.

ANOTHER TOOL FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT

Clearview AI can help law enforcement agencies get a head start on their investigations by providing leads for further investigation. However, it is still the responsibility of the agency to use other means to gather enough evidence to justify an arrest.

REDUCED AMOUNT OF MISIDENTIFICATIONS

Within weeks of using Clearview AI, federal prosecutors issued over 900 warrants and charged over 350 people.  Clearview AI was able to assist in the arrest of hundreds of rioters in a short amount of time, significantly lowering the likelihood of misidentification. The January 6th riot is just one instance where Clearview AI’s technology has shown to be pivotal during unprecedented events.

RELATED STORIES

I was appalled by the tragic events on January 6th and the attack on the Capitol and our democracy. While we cannot provide specifics on these cases, it is gratifying that Clearview AI has been used to identify the Capitol rioters who attacked our great symbol of democracy.
