After the violent activity at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) sought “information that will assist in identifying individuals” who committed violence on that day.
Sgt. Jason Webb of the Oxford (Alabama) Police Department searched some of the FBI images against the Clearview AI database. Some images matched immediately, while some poor-quality images required enhancement. For the matching images, Sgt. Webb only selected images that were associated with a name, an online profile, or other independent identifying information. For the selected images, Sgt. Webb developed suspect leads and forwarded those to the FBI.
Sgt. Webb’s use of running the suspects through Clearview AI provided helpful information to identify participants without misidentifying innocent people.
